Message From the President, Stephen Goldman, MD

April -- June, 2006

Home

For the North Jersey Civil War Round Table, 2006 has gotten off to a terrific start.
To date we've had Dr. Bradley Gottfried's excellent presentation on the First New Jersey Brigade and our own Norman Tomlinson's scholarly discussion of Civil War literature and diaries. In addition, the year's inaugural panel discussion of whether the War was inevitable was distinguished by the superb research of general members Endre Krajcsovics, Rob Gagnon, Tom Hopler and Dennis Kelly.

The presentations that lead to our summer hiatus promise to continue our banner year:
- April 27: Professor Alfred Blumrosen (Slave Nation: How Slavery United the Colonies & Sparked the American Revolution)
- May 25: Dr. Stephen Goldman, President ("Those Arms Were Not Lost in Vain": Union Soldiers and the Price of Freedom)
- June 22: Dr. Craig Symonds (Battle of Hampton Roads and the Recovery of the Monitor Turret)

In addition to our eagerly awaited September 28 presentation from Dr. Dwight Pitcaithley (Slavery as a Cause of the Civil War and Its Interpretation at NPS Battlefield Parks), I'm delighted to announce the final two lectures for 2006:

- October 26: Dr. John E. Clark, Jr. (Railroads in the Civil War)
- November 16: Hon. John Dangler and Hon. John Harper (moderators), Legal Panel Discussion of the Dred Scott Decision

Regarding our Annual Dinner, it will be held at the Basking Ridge Country Club on the evening of December 14.

Please mark your calendars for this gala event, when we will honor both Dr. James McPherson as our NJCWRT Person of the Year and Dr. Michael Musick for his career of distinguished public service as Civil War Expert at the National Archives.

As always, your suggestions and ideas for future programs are appreciated.

Steve Goldman, M.D.
